Summary

From the host of the podcast Terrible, Thanks for Asking—called “a gift” by The New York Times—a raw and humorous essay collection in the spirit of Little Weirds and Everything Happens for a Reason。

Nora McInerny does not dance like no one is watching。 In fact, she dances like everyone is watching, which is to say, she does not dance at all。 As a bestselling author and host of the beloved podcast Terrible, Thanks for Asking, she has captured the hearts of millions by discussing grief and loss with wit and warmth。 Now, with Bad Vibes Only, she turns her eye on our aggressively, oppressively optimistic culture, our obsession with self-improvement, and what it really means to live our lives online。

In a series of essays that span her childhood to present, Nora introduces us to her mind and her world while inviting us to more closely observe our own。 We meet the people that challenge, question, and make Nora reflect on her own life, habits, and personality: her children, and their homework meltdowns, job searches, and online personalities; her college friend Kathleen, who now lives as a cloistered nun; and her uncle, a philosopher who has never used the internet (gasp!)。

Bad Vibes Only is not only a response to a society that tells us to live, laugh, love—it’s a reminder that in a world where we are more connected to and observed by our peers than ever before, we still deserve the freedom to be ourselves。

A fresh and honest perspective with all of the sarcasm and humor。 A quick read that makes light of some difficult truths one may experience in life。 Special thanks to Net Galley。 All of the opinions expressed are my own。

I didn’t love this as much as her first two books but what does that matter? I love Nora and her honest and I will continue to preorder everything she writes forever。

I am so glad to know about Nora, her writing and her podcasts。 She has so much to say about life's most cringey moments, great pain and sadness, shame and what she calls toxic positivity as well as the downside of living your life through social media。 And she'll make you laugh all at the same time。 I'm a believer now。 I am so glad to know about Nora, her writing and her podcasts。 She has so much to say about life's most cringey moments, great pain and sadness, shame and what she calls toxic positivity as well as the downside of living your life through social media。 And she'll make you laugh all at the same time。 I'm a believer now。 。。。more

3。75⭐️ I’d never heard of Nora, but memoirs in essays have been really working for me and how could I pass by this cover and title? I enjoyed it and would definitely recommend to certain people, but nowhere near my favorite of this type of book。 It may be based on my season of life, but these didn’t impact me as much as others have。 Now that the books over, I’d already be hard pressed to relay even a few of her stories。

Jessica

My only complaint about this is that it was pretty short。

5 stars, because she seems like she needs it

I didn’t know Nora’s story firstI am not usually a fan of memoirs with just random disconnected stories, but being around the same age as this author it was mostly relatable and honest。 Not a make you feel good like you should get up and go conquer something book, but a feel good like doing your best with what you have where you are is a great place to be。

4。5 stars for this funny book of essays! My favorite one revolved around her crazy, Devil Wears Prada-esque jobs in NYC。 The lost hamster。 The edited emails。 The Ike dinners。 😆🤣😂

Funny, observational humor with a side of tragedy。 I didn’t follow Nora before listening so I didn’t really know her story。 It was lovely to hear her read her own words (as always with audiobooks)。 Her essays about family & parenting were my favorite & also her pandemic observations。 I’m glad to follow her on Instagram now & look forward to what she has coming next (No pressure, Nora!)

I knew after the first chapter that this would be a 5 star read for me。 Nora is honest, raw, and hilarious。 I loved every chapter and every story。

I've never heard of the podcast Terrible, Thanks for Asking until I stumbled upon this book。 So apparently I have been living under a rock。 Needless to say, we are all human and just doing our best in our journey throughout adulthood。 This novel gives a glimpse into one women's life with relatable antidotes。 I did feel a bit aged out of a few chapters as I am not a Taylor Swift fan。 Thank you Atria Books, Atria/One Signal Publishers for the e-book of Bad Vibes Only。 I've never heard of the podcast Terrible, Thanks for Asking until I stumbled upon this book。 So apparently I have been living under a rock。 Needless to say, we are all human and just doing our best in our journey throughout adulthood。 This novel gives a glimpse into one women's life with relatable antidotes。 I did feel a bit aged out of a few chapters as I am not a Taylor Swift fan。 Thank you Atria Books, Atria/One Signal Publishers for the e-book of Bad Vibes Only。 。。。more

This book made me laugh, choke up a bit, feel guilty, feel vindicated but most of all it made me think。 We probably need to spend more time exploring the topics the author brings up。

#BadVibesOnly was one of my September #nonfictionreads。 The insights are spot on, and I loved the balance of humor and relatability that made this book feel like a conversation with a great friend。 It was also easy to consume in some bites, as it is written in essay style format。 https://www。instagram。com/p/CjIxXZpLz。。。 #BadVibesOnly was one of my September #nonfictionreads。 The insights are spot on, and I loved the balance of humor and relatability that made this book feel like a conversation with a great friend。 It was also easy to consume in some bites, as it is written in essay style format。 https://www。instagram。com/p/CjIxXZpLz。。。 。。。more

📚Bad Vibes Only: by Nora McInerny💬Reader’s digest version: Nora, a brilliant podcast host and author, has crafted a series of essays that unflinchingly describe what it is to be a millennial mom in the throws of her late thirties and the hilarious, disheartening, and sometimes cringey ways we are adapting to the digital age of the present。 🏃🏻‍♀️My Take: I feel like this could have been my autobiography in many ways。 As a thirty-six year old mother of three, I related so fucking hard to Nora’s ex 📚Bad Vibes Only: by Nora McInerny💬Reader’s digest version: Nora, a brilliant podcast host and author, has crafted a series of essays that unflinchingly describe what it is to be a millennial mom in the throws of her late thirties and the hilarious, disheartening, and sometimes cringey ways we are adapting to the digital age of the present。 🏃🏻‍♀️My Take: I feel like this could have been my autobiography in many ways。 As a thirty-six year old mother of three, I related so fucking hard to Nora’s experience living in this ridiculous “instagrammable” day and age。 I have been struggling with constant guilt and sometimes even shame that I don’t measure up。 I scoff at people who need to project their lives in a picture perfect light on social media platforms while secretly craving that same validation myself。 Thank you @noraborealis for describing this paradox in a way that made me laugh and feel less alone。 Much of my depression and anxiety in this digital age comes from feeling like I’m the only one who feels this way。 Knowing I’m not the alone and that there is also space to laugh at the absurdity of it all made me feel safe and seen。If you are a millennial, a mom, someone experiencing grief and loss, or a woman fighting to find her place in the world。。you need to read this book。 It came to me at a time when I truly needed it。 Bad vibes Only hit shelves on October 11。 Get your copy now!!🙏🏻thank you @netgalley and @atriabooks for the arc。 。。。more

In a world of double tapping, subscribing, judging, competitive parenting, and phone addictions, Nora parlays her experiences into relatable stories that make you feel like you are sitting down with a long lost friend。 Her confessions often had me questioning if I was reading my own diary (except that I dramatically tried to burn them over 20 years ago and when that didn’t work, shredded them by hand and scattered them amongst various midwestern dumpsters。) This book is her best one yet (althoug In a world of double tapping, subscribing, judging, competitive parenting, and phone addictions, Nora parlays her experiences into relatable stories that make you feel like you are sitting down with a long lost friend。 Her confessions often had me questioning if I was reading my own diary (except that I dramatically tried to burn them over 20 years ago and when that didn’t work, shredded them by hand and scattered them amongst various midwestern dumpsters。) This book is her best one yet (although I have not read Hot Young Windows) and it shines like the star she is without the filters。 Because normal people can be absolute rock stars without the façade of curated content and perfection。 The first memoir I read was Jenny Lawson’s Let’s Pretend this Never Happened which smashed down the door and took the hands of people who were huddled in corners stewing in the depths of their own anxiety and depression。 It gave them a voice… we can talk about this?? And not be judged?? Nora has done the same with grief and continues to address mental health like Lawson and actually just being human (see Terrible, Thanks for Asking。) Bad Vibes is super funny, you will probably spill tears from laughing reading about the CPA and most definitely you will be producing heart-wrenching tears of fear, sadness, and relief reading Anything Can Happen。 Because we are all just humans doing our best。 To quote Nora “We are all just a bunch of feelings in skin suits doing our best impression of capable and okay grownups。” Most inspirational and motivating for me at this time in my life is Something Substantial which has me questioning my relationship with my phone, while reading the book from my phone。 This book was just that - substantial - and like all amazing books, I didn’t want it to end。 。。。more

Beautiful, funny and thought provoking。 Nora will have you laughing and crying within the same chapter。 If you don’t read this book and then immediately want to read the rest of her work, I don’t know what’s wrong with you。

Anxiety-fueled Capricorns, rise! Or maybe it’s because we grew up at a time when many elder-millennials were unknowingly experiencing the same formative events)。 Much of this book revolves around generational differences and parenting (and the expectations of parenting) in today’s world。 I highly recommend this to parents but is relatable to anyone who knows kids or was a kid。 This will make you want to put your screen down to call an old friend or relative and catch up…only to realize you have to pick your screen back up to do so。 。。。more

I was lucky to get an early copy of this book。 Nora is hilarious, smart, insightful, and honest。 I laughed HARD while reading it, and also felt the heart-squeezes。 Some of the writing is pure gold。 All of it is medicine。

I hadn't heard of McInerny before but this book of essays about motherhood, family, growing up in the Midwest, and work were interesting and relevant to me。 I was entertained by the essay about her crazy boss in New York。 I was inspired to reconnect without technology by the essay about her uncle who is a priest。 They were all good, but every parent needs to read the last few paragraphs of the last essay to reevaluate the pressure that we put on our kids。 ARC courtesy of the publisher and NetGal I hadn't heard of McInerny before but this book of essays about motherhood, family, growing up in the Midwest, and work were interesting and relevant to me。 I was entertained by the essay about her crazy boss in New York。 I was inspired to reconnect without technology by the essay about her uncle who is a priest。 They were all good, but every parent needs to read the last few paragraphs of the last essay to reevaluate the pressure that we put on our kids。 ARC courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley。 。。。more

I was intrigued by the title of this book, and I didn’t know much more about the book or the author。 I soon realized that I had seen Nora’s TedTalk about moving forward with grief (if you haven’t seen it, go watch it right now)。 I was then looking forward to reading her newest book。 While I didn’t relate to every one her essays, I enjoyed reading them and hearing about Nora’s experiences。 Nora says that a life worth living is about more than just “good vibes。” In every essay, she is real and aut I was intrigued by the title of this book, and I didn’t know much more about the book or the author。 I soon realized that I had seen Nora’s TedTalk about moving forward with grief (if you haven’t seen it, go watch it right now)。 I was then looking forward to reading her newest book。 While I didn’t relate to every one her essays, I enjoyed reading them and hearing about Nora’s experiences。 Nora says that a life worth living is about more than just “good vibes。” In every essay, she is real and authentic and even discusses the heavier topic of grief while still making the reader laugh and relate to her everyday antics, such as not understanding friendships as an adult。 Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for the ARC。 。。。more

Bad Vibes Only: (and Other Things I Bring to the Table) by Nora McInerny is a highly recommended collection of nineteen essays。In the "Before We Begin" opening where McInerny discusses people saying everything is "fine" in response to the question, "how are you?" no matter how things really are, she immediately won my heart as a co-worker and I repeatedly would say, "It's fine, everything is fine" to each other in stressed out voices while running to handle one crisis after another。 These essays Bad Vibes Only: (and Other Things I Bring to the Table) by Nora McInerny is a highly recommended collection of nineteen essays。In the "Before We Begin" opening where McInerny discusses people saying everything is "fine" in response to the question, "how are you?" no matter how things really are, she immediately won my heart as a co-worker and I repeatedly would say, "It's fine, everything is fine" to each other in stressed out voices while running to handle one crisis after another。 These essays excel in the truisms that reside within them and many people will be able to relate to most of the essays on some level。The essays are all honest and reflect on events that have happened in her life, some of them are weighty, and this is where their strength lies。 Subjects cover include in part: grief and loss, parenting, self-improvement, aging, makeup, teenage years, several childhood experiences, mental health, social media, and more。 All of the essays are firmly experiences from her life, which made them skew a bit on the younger side for me, but they will likely resonate much more with people, especially mothers, in their thirties to early forties。The writing is very good and the topics are interesting。 McInerny uses humor and vulnerability to share the empathetic insights into her life。 As with any collection of essays, not all of them will appeal to everyone but most readers will find something to enjoy in this collection。 And the cover is very appealing。Disclosure: My review copy was courtesy of Atria/One Signal via NetGalley。http://www。shetreadssoftly。com/2022/1。。。 。。。more
